No — bed bugs follow people, not mess. They're picked up from travel, accommodation, public transport and second-hand furniture, and five-star hotels get them too. There's no shame in it; there's only treating it properly.
Can I just throw out the mattress?
Usually unnecessary, and often a mistake — bed bugs also live in the frame, headboard, skirtings and carpet edges, so a new mattress just gives them fresh territory. Treat first; your technician will tell you honestly if anything genuinely needs to go.
How should I prepare for the treatment?

How soon can I sleep in the bed again?
