Paper wasp nest under an eave

Know the enemy

A nest never gets smaller on its own

A wasp nest that's golf-ball sized in spring can hold thousands of wasps by late summer. Unlike bees, wasps sting repeatedly, defend their nest aggressively, and get bolder as the colony grows — which is exactly when people get hurt trying the DIY route with a spray can and a ladder.

Bees are a different story: they're vital pollinators, so where a swarm or hive can be saved, relocation comes first. Either way, the answer starts with correct identification — and ends with your outdoor space being yours again.

Did you know?

Unlike a bee, a wasp can sting again and again — and crushing one releases an alarm pheromone that calls the nest to defend it. That's why swatting near a nest is the worst possible move.

How we handle wasps and bees

Right identification, right method, right protective gear — and no one gets stung.

A Pesthelp technician walking a customer through the treatment plan
1

Identify the insect and find every nest

Paper wasps, European wasps and bees each need a different approach. We locate the nest — including hidden ones in cavities and the ground — and confirm what we're dealing with.

2

Treat or remove the nest safely

Full protective equipment, professional products and the experience to do it without turning your backyard into a war zone. Where practical, the nest is removed entirely.

3

Bees handled responsibly

Bees are pollinators first, pests second. Where a hive or swarm can be relocated, that's the path we take before any treatment is considered.

4

Stop the rebuild

Wasps re-nest in favourite spots. We treat the surrounding area and tell you what to watch for so next spring doesn't bring a sequel.

Frequently asked questions

Can't I just knock the nest down at night?

Please don't. Wasps don't all leave the nest at night, they defend it violently when disturbed, and multiple stings are dangerous — especially for anyone with an allergy. The internet's tricks put people in hospital every summer. This one genuinely is a call-a-professional job.

Wasps or bees — how do I tell the difference?

Wasps are slimmer with a narrow waist, brighter yellow, smooth-bodied and can sting repeatedly. Bees are rounder, furrier and duller in colour. If you're not sure, send us a photo when you call — identification changes how we handle it, especially since bees get relocated where possible.

There are wasps around but I can't find a nest. Can you still help?

Yes — regular wasp traffic means a nest within range, often in a wall cavity, roof void or a neighbour's yard. Finding hidden nests is a normal part of the job, and treating the nest is the only fix that lasts.

How quickly does treatment work?

Nest treatments work fast — activity typically collapses within 24 hours, and your technician will tell you when the area is safe to use again.
