Know the enemy
The bush is right there. So is your roof.
Nowhere blurs the line between bushland and backyard like the Northern Rivers — which is exactly why possums in the roof are one of the region's most common calls. Brushtails treat roof voids as luxury hollows: warm, dry, safe from owls and pythons, and conveniently located above a garden full of food.
They're also protected natives, so the job isn't about harming them — it's about humane, legal removal followed by the step that actually solves the problem: sealing every entry so neither this possum nor the next one in line moves back in.
Did you know?
Tree hollows are scarce and possums are territorial — evict one without sealing the roof and the territory's next possum takes the vacancy, often within days. The sealing, not the removal, is what ends it.
What's that noise in the roof?

Heavy thumps at dusk and dawn

Slow walking sounds overhead

Hissing or coughing calls

Droppings in the roof void

Ceiling stains from urine

Torn insulation
Spotting any of these? Call 1300 737 800 — and we'll work out what's really up there.
How we solve it for good
Confirm, remove humanely, seal thoroughly — and give the possum somewhere better to be.

Confirm the tenant
Possum, roof rats or birds — the region's roofs host all three, at different hours and volumes. We inspect the void and confirm before anything else, because the fixes differ completely.
Humane, compliant removal
One-way exits and compliant trapping that get the possum out unharmed, fully within NSW wildlife rules — no poisons, ever.
Seal the entries properly
Lifted tiles, eave gaps, broken vents — found and closed. On the region's older timber homes this step takes real care, and it's the one that makes the fix permanent.
Rehouse the neighbour
A possum box in a suitable tree keeps the evicted local in its territory — the neighbourly solution that also stops it testing your roof again.

Frequently asked questions
Can't you just take it into the bush somewhere?
No — possums are protected in NSW, and long-distance relocation is illegal and usually fatal for the animal, which loses its territory and its hollows. Humane removal plus a sealed roof is both the lawful path and the one that actually works.
Our place is surrounded by trees — won't they just keep coming?
They'll keep visiting the garden — that's the region — but a properly sealed roof simply stops being an option. We'll also point out the branch access worth trimming, which slows down the attempts considerably.
How fast can it be out of my roof?
Usually within days — the possum exits through a one-way system, we confirm the void is empty, and seal the entries in the same visit wherever possible. The nightly thumping ends with it.
Is it a possum or rats up there?
Slow, heavy thumps just after dark point to a possum; light fast scratching through the night says rats. If it's both — not rare up here — we handle both, with completely different methods.
